Burgos cathedral – Antonio de Cabezón’s hometown, Castrillo de Matajudíos – Villasandino - Santoyo (Palencia) - Convento de Santa Clara, Tordesillas (Valladolid) – Fundación Joaquín Díaz, Urueña (Valladolid)

Following the symposium held in the Parador de Mojácar from October 8th -9th, FIMTE will hosts excursions to the above mentioned collections of Spanish keyboard instruments, including a visit to Antonio de Cabezón’s hometown..
The following provisional schedule had been announced for:
Monday, October 11th
Departing point: Burgos
Morning: Visit to Burgos cathedral, one of the most beautiful buildings in the Gothic art style (a World Heritage Site). In the Constable’s Chaple an anonymous sixteenth century organ is preserved, popularly called Antonio de Cabezón organ.
Visit to the early baroque organ in Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Villasandino (coach provided by FIMTE).
An introduction to the organs (English and Spanish) shall be provided by the organ maker Federico Acitores, who has restaured more than 40 historic instruments. Organists may play the organs.
Lunch in Villasandino
Afternoon: Visit to Antonio de Cabezón’s home town, Castrillo de Matajudíos (coach provided by FIMTE), where Cabezón’s house is still preserved (only outdoors view). Visit to the baroque organ in San Juan Bautista, Santoyo-Palencia (coach provided byFIMTE)
Evening: Travel back to Burgos (coach provided by FIMTE)
The tour to the organs will be conducted by the organ maker Federico Acitores (English and Spanish). Organists may play the organs.
Tuesday October 12th
Morning: Travel to Urueña, Valladolid (coach provided by FIMTE).Visit to the Fundación Joaquín Díaz in Urueña. Included in the exhibits herein are the two most recently discovered period Spanish harpsichords. Additionally, the museum houses the most extensive and comprehensive collection of traditional musical instruments from Castile and León, comprising seven hundred pieces. Tour conducted by Luisa Morales.

Afternoon and early evening: Travel to Tordesillas. A visit to the Real Monasterio of Santa Clara which houses the only extant virginal (1570) by Hans Bos, famous for its unique decoration, and for been the earliest recorded instrument using the decorative paper with the “dolphin”. The instruments collection is completed by a clavichord and a realejo. Santa Clara is an old palace built by king Alfonso XI of Castile in the 14th century that was turned into a convent later by wish of king Pedro, Alfonso’s son. It is considered to be one of the best examples of Mudejar art in Castile and León. Different living rooms of great architectural and decorative interest such as the Mudejar Chapel, the Arabic Yard, the Golden Chapel, the Refectory, the Yard El Vergel...It contains painting, sculpture and furniture collections, among others, an altarpiece with paintings attributed to Nicolás Francés (c.1468). Santa Clara is considered the masterpiece of Castilian mudejar style. The tour to the music instruments will be conducted by Luisa Morales (English and Spanish). N.B. Please, note that the tour departs from the city of BURGOS. The easiest way to arrive to Burgos is from Madrid. Several trains connect Madrid to Burgos (the fast train in two hours; other trains in 3 to 4 hours). It is recommended to book well in advance as these dates coincide with local holidays in Spain.

The tour price includes transport costs (11th and 12th October) from Burgos to Villasandino, Castrillo de Matajudíos, Santoyo, Tordesillas, Urueña and back to Burgos, plus the two complimentary lunches and complimentary museums tickets.
Partial registration in the tour is not an option.
