SHUANN CHAI

Pianist Shuann Chai's recent performances include recitals for the National Trust and Foundling Museum in London ( England ), the Holberg Festival ( Norway ), and the Young Masters Performance Series in The Hague ( Holland ). Her December concert for the Seaton Music Society ( England ) was "a fascinating occasion... Miss Chai is an extremely talented pianist...eloquent and elegant (The Devon Herald)." Last season, an all-Beethoven program for the Bloomington Early Music Festival also garnered special praise in a concert review as well as in the critic's summary of the Festival itself: "She exhibited superb command of the instrument...suffusing [her performance] with a hefty wattage of emotional intensity."

Previous concert seasons have taken her from Beijing , China (as a guest artist at Qinghua University ) to Kiev , Ukraine , where she performed concerti by Schumann and Tchaikovsky. She has also been featured in live radio broadcasts on WGBH Boston (with cellist Pieter Wispelwey) and Radio-Canada, and was chosen to perform in the Young Musicians' Concert at the International Music Seminar of Prussia Cove, England .

Ms. Chai completed undergraduate degrees in Piano and Biology at Oberlin College . After choosing music over medical school, she continued her studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston where she earned a Master's in Music. Her teachers have included Jack Radunsky, Norma Fisher, Bart van Oort, and David Breitman, and she has worked extensively with Viennese pianist Claus-Christian Schuster of the Altenberg Trio and Malcolm Bilson, professor emeritus at Cornell University . Presently Shuann is completing a Ph.D in Musicology at Brandeis University , where she was awarded the H.M. Remis Fellowship as well as the Gershwin Foundation Prize.

Upcoming concerts include programs for the Trondheim Philharmonic Society in Norway , the Raadzaal Amsterdam, Lutherse Kerk of Utrecht , University of Edinboro ( Scotland , UK ) and a series of recitals on historical instruments at Wake Forest University , Salem College , UNC Greensboro and Gallery Concerts of Seattle. Throughout the year, she will also perform a number of outreach concerts in the Netherlands for the "Musicians Worldwide" Foundation.
