Picasso y el Modernismo Musical (c.1900-1940)
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death, FIMTE is holding its 15th international symposium jointly with the University of Melbourne (12-14 October 2023 at the Parador of Mojácar, Almería, Andalusia, and 13-14 October 2023 at the University of Melbourne) as part of the 24th International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music. The festival will feature a full week of concerts, expert lectures, and workshops.
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a witness and frontline actor of the music currents developing in Barcelona, Paris, and other sites prior to World War II. This symposium will explore the mutual influences between the Visual arts (particularly in the orbit of Picasso) and Music, and how aspects of musical modernity emerged through the negotiation of different cultural, technical and stylistic parameters.
Specific themes include, but are not restricted to:
-
Picasso’s instrumentarium
-
Picasso’s music circle
-
Musical entertainment genres and the visual arts
-
Revivals and representations of the guitar
-
Early Music Revivals and nouveau classicisme: keyboard instruments
-
Musical approximations of primitivism, cubism, nouveau classicisme and art deco
We welcome 200-250-word abstracts for 20-minute papers, as well as proposals for lecture-concerts (30-minutes) and concerts (one hour). Abstracts should be signed at the bottom with the author’s name, institutional affiliation or city of residence and full return address, including e-mail address.
To facilitate maximum participation, the format of the symposium will be hybrid, that is, both in person and virtual.
Official languages: English and Spanish
Deadline for abstracts: 15 March 2023
